Weekend Roundup Week 31 – Vacation Time

There’s only one thing more precious than our time and that’s who we spend it on.

Vacation Time

Covid-19 has been a real pain in the backside this year but on a personal note, it has given me an extra week vacation as our whole factory has shut down. We are currently camping and making the most of this time together and it has made me sit down and have a little ponder.

PS. Look at that sky.. Yes it is Ireland and surprisingly it is not raining even though it was forecasted to!

Last Coffee Order!

Some of you may know that I currently own a coffee shop with my sister in law and also have a full-time job as an engineer. This always gave me some kind of security as I never felt so dependant on one or the other.

Well after recent chats throughout lockdown with my sister in law and wife, we have decided to no longer keep the cafe. There is a number of reasons why this makes sense for my sister in law and we always said we would support each other’s decision when the time came. She gave it 100% but it is a good time to move on.

This was not such a big deal financially as I still have my full time and a healthy emergency fund but I no longer have a sense of security.

Time has an expiration date!

While we are here camping, We are surrounded by most of our family. The kids are having a great time and these memories will last all of us a lifetime. This is how I want to spend my time – making memories. Companies can come and go, as I experienced in my first factory job. And this forced vacation time due to my current factory shut down further cements my feelings that I should not rely on another company to provide for my family.

This is really driving my passion for financial freedom. It is now time to open up to some more opportunities.

On the subject of time, I came across this excellent post from Bruno (HE) Mirchevski called Your Time Is Worth More Than Money One paragraph, quoted below really resonated with me.

However, remember — time has an expiration date. Therefore, it is a limited resource that cannot be bought or replaced. No matter how much you enjoy in the materialistic things, remember that they come and go, but time doesn’t.

Dividend talk!

This week proved to be a very busy week on the investing front. Dividend talk is a podcast which I host with European DGI. for those who don’t know, it is a podcast when we meet up once a week and chat about our common passion – Dividend Investing.

This week I had a look at the latest earnings report from ADP and Pfizer while EDGI looked at Danone and UPS. Have a listen and let me know what you think. If you are not familiar with ADP, I also wrote a review on them here.

We recorded this podcast a little earlier than usual because we were both on vacation starting on friday. let me know in the comments below what your thoughts are.

FOMO!

FOMO is very real and for those who are as not as down with the cool kids as I am this means fear of missing out!. Looking at all these tech companies recently like Tesla and Shopify it is totally normal to feel like you are missing out if you don’t own them. Especially if you are on money twitter and everyone else seems to be benefiting from these companies.

I am happy for any of my followers if the benefit from these big swings and I love to see people succeed but I do not try and compare my portfolio against anyone else. This helps me to reduce any FOMO feelings I may have. As an investor, the worst thing we can do is make irrational decisions based on that fear. I prefer to instead analyze why I never invested in them in the first place and maybe find some clues in finding the next one.

Interesting Blogs

Can you Invest 1 with only $1. It may seem impossible and if you have aspirations of making millions than you will certainly need more than 1 dollar. However, MattMoney has an excellent post and youtube video on the subject.

It is worth a read if you are in the mind frame that you need lots of money to invest money. Modern technology has indeed made it possible to get started for as little as 1$. I have embedded the video below for anyone who is interested.

Quick write up this week as I have a game of world cup to win!

Enjoy your weekend and happy investing!
